ਸੇਵਾ – The Spirit of Giving

The Spirit of Giving

Giving is a divine virtue, and in Sikhism, Daswandh (ਦਸਵੰਧ) is the practice of contributing one-tenth (10%) of one’s earnings towards Guru’s mission and community welfare. It is not merely charity; it is anact of devotion, gratitude, and service.

Daswandh – A Divine Principle

The word “Daswandh” comes from “Das” (ten) and “Wandh” (to share), meaning to dedicate a portion of our earnings, time, or resources for the well-being of humanity. By giving Daswandh, we recognize that all our blessings come from Guru Sahib and must be shared selflessly.

Guru’s Teachings

Guru Nanak Dev Ji laid the foundation of Daswandh by teaching the principle of honest work (Kirat Karni), sharing (Vand Chakna), and remembrance of Waheguru (Naam Japna). Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasized the importance of earning honestly and sharing with others:

Guru Nanak Dev Ji says:

ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਲਿਛੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਿ ਰਾਹੁ ਪਛਾਣਲਹ ਸੇਇ ॥੧॥
“Ghaal Khaaye, Kichh Hathahu De, Nanak Raah Pachhaane Se.”
(One who earns through honest means and shares with others, that person has found the true path – Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 1245)

Guru Arjan Dev Ji says:

Guru Arjan Dev Ji institutionalized Daswandh as a formal system to support the development of the Sikh community. Under his leadership, Sikhs voluntarily contributed a portion of their earnings to fund the construction of Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) and other community service projects.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji says:

Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of Sikhs, issued 52 Hukams (52 Commands) to guide the Khalsa. The second Hukam states: “Daswandh Dena” – Give Daswandh. It is a directive for Sikhs to contribute regularly to support the Guru’s mission, maintain Sikh institutions, and uplift those in need.
